EAPCET Counselling Phases Explained: When to Lock Your Choices

✍️ Seat Genie Team·5 June 2026·⏱️ 4 min read

Phase 1, Phase 2, Phase 3 β€” counselling has multiple rounds and each one is a fresh opportunity. Missing the right phase can cost you your dream college.

Why Multiple Phases?

Not all seats fill in the first round. Some students who get allotted in Phase 1 choose not to join β€” either they got a better option elsewhere or they are pursuing other exams (JEE, BITSAT, etc.). Vacated seats are re-allotted in Phase 2 and Phase 3.

This means students who missed Phase 1 cutoffs often get their preferred college in later phases.

TS EAPCET Phase Structure

PhasePurposeTypical Timeline
Phase 1Main allotment β€” highest competitionJuly
Phase 2Re-allotment of vacated seatsAugust
Phase 3Final mop-up β€” last chanceAugust/September
Special PhaseSeats specifically reserved from NRI/Management quota and leftover govt seatsSeptember

AP EAPCET Round Structure

AP uses "rounds" instead of phases but the concept is identical. 3–4 rounds take place between July and September.

Strategic Tips

Should you participate in Phase 1?

Yes, always. Getting allotted in Phase 1 does not prevent you from re-participating in Phase 2. If you exercise slide/float/freeze correctly:

  • Freeze β†’ Keep your Phase 1 allotment, don't participate further
  • Float β†’ Participate in Phase 2 hoping for a better option; if nothing better comes, keep Phase 1
  • Slide β†’ Participate in Phase 2 but only upgrade within the same college (safer option)

Phase 2 & 3 cutoffs

Often better (lower rank needed) than Phase 1 because:

  • Demand drops as students join other institutions
  • Management converts some seats to government category
  • NRI/category seats that were not filled become open

What Seat Genie Can Tell You

Ask: "What were the Phase 2 and Phase 3 cutoffs for CSE at [College Name] for OC category in 2024?"

Comparing Phase 1 vs Phase 3 cutoffs helps you understand how much the cutoff improved and whether it's worth waiting for later phases.

Key Advice

  1. Never skip Phase 1 registration just because your rank is borderline
  2. Fill as many valid choices as possible β€” not just your dream college
  3. Use Seat Genie to simulate realistic options for each phase
  4. Keep your documents ready from day one β€” allotment letters have tight joining deadlines
