JoSAA 2025 NIT & IIIT Opening/Closing Ranks — How to Use Seat Genie for JEE Counselling

✍️ Seat Genie Team·20 June 2026·⏱️ 6 min read

JoSAA 2025 seat allocation for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs is based on JEE Main ranks. Here is how opening and closing ranks work, which factors matter, and how to use AI to predict your chances.

What is JoSAA?

JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) conducts centralized counselling for seats in IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs based on JEE Advanced and JEE Main ranks. JoSAA 2025 typically begins in June after JEE Advanced results.

Understanding Opening and Closing Ranks

  • Opening Rank: The best (lowest) rank that received the seat in that round
  • Closing Rank: The worst (highest) rank that received the seat — this is the cutoff

If your JEE Main rank is below (better than) the closing rank for a program, you have a reasonable chance.

Factors That Affect Your NIT/IIIT Cutoff

  1. JEE Main rank — CRL (Common Rank List) rank is the primary factor
  2. Category — OBC-NCL, EWS, SC, ST, PwD have separate cutoffs
  3. Gender — Female supernumerary seats have different cutoffs (usually better)
  4. Home State — NITs have 50% Home State quota with generally better cutoffs
  5. Branch — CSE and ECE are most competitive; Civil and Mining are easiest
