JoSAA vs CSAB: Understanding the Special Round Rules

What is CSAB?

While JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) conducts the regular 5 or 6 rounds of counselling for IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs, CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) handles the "Special Rounds" to fill leftover vacant seats in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs (collectively known as the NIT+ system).

Important Note: IITs do not participate in CSAB Special Rounds. Any vacant IIT seats after JoSAA are closed.

Why Participate in CSAB?

CSAB cutoffs are often significantly more relaxed than JoSAA rounds. Because many students vacate their NIT seats to join IITs, BITS, or local state colleges at the last minute, top-tier seats in core branches suddenly open up for candidates with lower JEE Main ranks.

Core Differences in Rules

1. Registration and Fees

Unlike JoSAA, which is free to register, CSAB requires a participation fee upfront. This fee acts as a security deposit to prevent students from spamming options and then refusing allotments.

* If you are allotted a seat, the fee is adjusted against your college tuition.

* If you are not allotted anything, the deposit is refunded (minus a small processing charge).

2. Treatment of Existing JoSAA Seats

* If you already hold a JoSAA seat and want to try CSAB, you can participate.

If you are allotted a new seat in CSAB, your old JoSAA seat is automatically cancelled* and given to someone else. You cannot choose between the two at the end.

* If you do not get any seat in CSAB, your existing JoSAA seat remains safe.

Strategy for Choice Filling in CSAB

Because any CSAB allotment immediately cancels your JoSAA seat, you must only fill options that are better than your current seat.

1. List only the branches and colleges you would happily join over your current choice.
2. Do not fill safety options below your current seat just to fill the list.
