5 Critical Mistakes to Avoid During EAPCET Web Options Entry

✍️ Seat Genie Team·6 June 2026·⏱️ 6 min read

Web options entry is the single most important phase of EAPCET counselling. A simple sequencing mistake can land you in the wrong college. Here is what to avoid.

Your Preference List is Binding

Many students believe that entering options in a random order is fine because the computer will find the "best" college for them. This is a myth. The system evaluates your list from top to bottom. The moment it finds a matching seat in your list, it allocates it to you and stops searching.

If you place a lower-tier college above a top-tier college, you will be allotted the lower-tier one even if your rank qualified you for the top-tier college.

1. Placing a Lower-Choice College Above a Better One

Always sort strictly by your personal preference. Keep this hierarchy in mind:

  • Top Choices (Safe/Reach/Dream) should go at the top of the list.
  • Safety Options must be at the bottom.

Never mix them. If you get a safety choice early, you cannot get back your reach option.

2. Entering Too Few Options

"I only want CBIT or MGIT CSE, so I will only enter 2 options." This is highly risky. If cutoffs drop or competition shifts, you might end up with zero allotments in Round 1.

Our recommendation*: Fill at least 30-40 choices, spreading them across:

- 10% Low Chance / Dream picks (Reach options)

- 60% Moderate Chance options (Target options)

- 30% Safe options (Fallback options)

3. Ignoring the College Codes

Many colleges have almost identical names. For example, CBIT (Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology) and other local institutions might sound similar. Always verify the 4-letter college code (e.g. CBIT, MGIT, VNRV) against the official list before locking.

4. Copying a Friend's Choice List

Your friend's list is built for their rank, their category, their location preference, and their branch choices. Copying their order verbatim is a recipe for disappointment. Customize your list to match your own rank potential.

5. Forgetting to Save or Lock

In TS and AP EAPCET portals, options are only locked after a final OTP verification. Leaving options as drafts might result in your submission being blank or reverting to an older draft. Verify the final "Locked Options" PDF output.
